You have probably heard that having a blog is an important part of online marketing, but you're not alone if you are thinking 'how on earth do you make money from blogging?'
This post will answer that question then provide some quick tips for getting started.
Blogging can initiate a relationship
At its most basic level, having a blog (or publishing any other useful information for that matter) helps the reader of your blog begin their relationship with you - even if it's from afar.
Specifically, it begins the know, like and trust which is so important for engaging prospects and clients.
By regularly talking about your area of expertise, you prove that -
- you are knowledgeable in your subject matter
- you are actively engaged in what you are doing
- you are reliable and consistent
Blogging can cement existing clients and potential readers.
The best way to ensure that you remain front of mind with clients is as the engaged expert / enthusiast / helper / solution to their problem. You can do this via their email in box.
Their in-boxes? How can a blog show up in someone's email?
No online marketing activity should be done in isolation, if you are to tap into its full potential.
Writing a blog post is just a part of a bigger marketing picture, for example -
- offer your readers the option to subscribe for notifications of new blog posts
- your blog post can have a call to action or some related promotional information or marketing hook getting blog visitors to engage with you (eg. "for more information about this topic contact me")
Keep in mind is that marketing is a process - the first time someone comes across you they may not be ready to buy or know enough about you to make a buying decision, but if you keep doing what you're doing you are sending many subtle yet strong messages.
So is writing a blog hard?
The hard part is just making the decision to get started.
When blogging is really understood, it is not difficult at all. The topics you write about can (actually should ) stem from what your clients ask you about, and related to what you are good at. Look through your emails!
What can be challenging is writing consistently - but when you realise it can be as simple as a public and structured way of answering your client's most asked questions, it becomes far less daunting.
Of course a blog can be much more than this, but focusing on real questions your clients are asking you is by far the easiest place to start. And if writing and the idea of blogging is just not your thing, there are other ways of achieving a similar result, but that's a topic for another time.
